Let’s talk about these problems below. Don’t worry. We can repair all of them.

Clogged Catalytic Converter

If your vehicle is over 10 years old and the catalytic converter is clogged, the exhaust will be forced back into the combustion chamber. This will create a problem with combustion production. Consequently, the engine will sputter until you replace the catalytic converter.

Clogged Fuel Filter/Injectors

A fuel-delivery problem can also cause the engine to sputter all the time. Generally, the cause of the delivery problem is a fuel filter that is clogged or fuel injectors that are clogged. We can replace the filter or professionally clean the injectors to restore their performance.

Leaking Vacuum Hose

A leaking vacuum hose can also make your car’s engine sputter all the time because it will fill the engine with air. This creates a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Unfortunately, this mixture starves the engine of fuel and affects its performance.

Malfunctioning Fuel Pump

You may also end up with a sputtering engine if the fuel pump is malfunctioning. The fuel pump will last about 100,000 miles before it starts to have problems. Once it does, it may be unable to deliver enough fuel to the engine for it to perform smoothly.

Malfunctioning MAF Sensor

The mass airflow or MAF sensor rarely goes bad. It can get dirty, however, and when this happens, it may skew the air inflow data that it sends to the engine control module. This may cause the module to add air in the combustion chamber when it doesn’t need it.

Malfunctioning O2 Sensor

A malfunctioning oxygen or O2 sensor can create the same problem, and when there is too much air in the combustion chamber, the engine will sputter. On average, you need to replace the O2 sensor every 100,000 miles after it goes bad.

Misfiring Spark Plugs

Finally, your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine is going to sputter all the time if the spark plugs are misfiring. Each plug should fire once in each cylinder in the order in which the engine control module engages them. Misfiring spark plugs mean a sputtering engine.
